Easter Bunny Hat for Blythe dolls – Free Pattern

Dress your Blythe doll for Easter and Spring with this cute Easter Bunny hat for Blythe dolls. Free knitting pattern to download.

The chenille yarn used is super soft and gives a beautiful fluffy effect. Plus, it’s super chunky so the hat is quick to knit.

The hat is knit flat with a seam at the back, though it could easily be converted to knitting-in-the-round with DPNs. The ears are knit separately and attached at the end – giving you opportunity to be creative with their placement.

Decorate your hat with a bow or flowers and finish it off with a pom pom tail at the back.

Easter Bunny Hat for Blythe dolls pattern

MATERIALS

  • One ball of bulky weight chenille yarn (I used Creative Basics brand) in white or colour of your choice
  • One ball of fluffy novelty yarn for inner ears (I used Lincraft Entice) in pink or colour of your choice
  • Small amount of 4 ply / Fingering weight yarn in a colour similar to hat yarn (this yarn is used to attach ears and make pompom)
  • One pair of 6mm knitting needles
  • One pair of 7mm knitting needles
  • Pom pom maker (optional)
  • 2 round black beads for eyes
  • DMC stranded embroidery cotton in colour 761 for face embroidery
  • Bows, flowers, trims to decorate
  • Tapestry needle for attaching ears and weaving in ends
  • Sewing cotton in a colour similar to hat yarn (used for attaching inner ears to ears)

GAUGE

Refer to the published gauge of the yarns used above to find suitable substitutes:

  • Creative Basics chenille yarn: 10 stitches/20 rows per 10cm using 5mm needles
    • Possible alternatives are Lion Brand’s Chenille Yarn, Velvetspun Yarn, Festive Fur and Luxe Fur or Louisa Harding’s Nerissa – though you will need to check gauge and modify if necessary
  • Lincraft Entice: 20 stitches/10 rows per 10cm using 6mm needles
    • Possible alternatives are Martha Stewart’s Glitter Eyelash Yarn

SKILL LEVEL

Beginner

NOTE

The chenille yarn creates a very tight cast on row, that’s why I used the larger needles for casting on. If you’re using a different yarn you may not need to use larger needles.

CO 52 sts loosely with 7mm needles and chenille yarn. Change to 6mm needles.
Row 1 (WS): k1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1

Row 3: k1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Row 4: p1, p2tog, purl to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1
Row 5: *k6, k2tog; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4

Row 11: knit
Row 12: purl
Row 13: k2tog to last st, k1
Row 14: p2tog to end

Cut a long tail and weave through remaining stitches twice. Sew back seam but don’t join the cast on row together (create a little ‘V’).

EARS

Make 2
CO 8sts with 6mm needles and chenille yarn.
Row 1 (WS) knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat these two rows until row 13.
Row 13: k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog

INNER EARS

Make 2
CO 8sts with 6mm needles and fluffy yarn.
Row 1 (WS): knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat these two rows until row 9.
Row 9: k2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog
Row 10: purl
Row 11: k2tog, k2, k2tog
Row 12: purl
BO sts.

Weave in ends and attach inner ears to ears using sewing cotton. Using fingering weight yarn to match hat colour, fold over the sides of the ears at the base and stitch in place. Then attach ears to hat.

BLOCKING

I didn’t need to block my hat but if you want to, immerse it in cold water and squeeze gently. Then block over a short tumbler glass and let dry.

DECORATING

Using 4 strands of DMC stranded embroidery cotton in colour 761, sew a triangle where you want the nose to go. Use this as a guide to placing your straight stitches. Then work two straights to create the mouth. Work them loosely and manoeuvre them with the needle to create a curve. Attach two black beads for the eyes.

Make a pompom using the fingering weight yarn and attach to the back to create a tail.

Decorate as desired with bows or flowers.
